5 Breakfast spots in and around the Midlands Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 18 May 2023 Air that smells fresh, rolling country hills, chirping birds, and delicious breakfast spots are a few of the idyllic things you will come across when in the Midlands. These 5 places boast a perfectly crafted cup of coffee, tasty breakfast options, and a relaxed atmosphere that will make you feel as though you’re on holiday, even if you’re just passing through. On your next drive-through or stay in the Midlands, I definitely suggest that you give one of these breakfast spots a visit. 1. Fable A restaurant that invites the outside in with its large glass sliding doors and earthy decor. Fable serves a delicious breakfast with a delicious atmosphere. Fable uses a combination of produce grown in their own garden and locally-sourced ingredients from the Midlands area to serve their delicious meals. Once the tummy is full and the heart is happy, take a turn on their Instagram-worthy swings or go for a leisurely stroll through the garden. Location: 85 Curry’s Post Road, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Website: midlandsfable.co.za Opening Hours: Monday – Saturday | 8:00 – 16:00; Sunday | 8:00 – 3:00 2. Barn Owl If you’re familiar with the Midlands then you must be, at least a little, familiar with Barn Owl, the 2021 winner of Coffee Magazine’s ‘Best Cafe Design’. Feel like you’re walking through a greenhouse, but one that produces a good breakfast and a good cup of coffee. If you sit outside, you’ll be spoilt with green views of the glorious Dargle Valley. Location: Groundcover farm, Currys Post rd, Howick Website: thebarnowl.co.za Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday | 9:00 – 16:00 3. Terbodore This dog-crazy girl was a little sad not to be greeted by their old Great Dane and mascot, Mac, but that was where the disappointment ended. Meander through the quaint shops at the venue, and the beautiful grounds. Tuck into their interesting menu that ranges from homemade nut and oats granola to a hearty traditional English breakfast. It is also highly suggested that you end your meal with a cup of one of the Midland’s finest flat whites. Location: 87 Currys Post Road, Howick, 3290 Website: terbodore.com Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday | 8:30 – 16:30 4. The Treatery Part of Yard 41, next to the village, The Treatery is, well, a treat to visit. Think wooden furniture, greenery, exposed shelving, and a classy simplicity. The cake display will call your name and you won’t be disappointed if you order a treat or two. However, if you’re there for breakfast, you can never go wrong with their eggs benedict covered in the perfect creamy hollandaise sauce. Location: Yard 41, 2 Shafton Road, Howick Website: facebook.com/midlandstreatery Operating Hours: Monday – Friday | 7:00 – 16:00; Saturday – Sunday | 8:00 – 15:00 5. The Junction For me, it’s not a visit to the Midlands without a visit to the Junction on Nottingham Road. Walk through all the shops to see what exciting goodies you could possibly purchase, watch the happy ducks on the dam, and enjoy a bite to eat. The Daily Bagle and Seattle Coffee have collaborated in a unique way. You can order your cappuccino from Seattle Coffee, and then head over to the Daily Bagle to choose your baked breakfast good. Choose to either sit inside the industrial-vibe building or enjoy the fresh Midlands air in the outdoor seating area. Location: Nottingham Road R103, Kwazulu-Natal Website: junctionshopping.co.za Operating Hours: Monday – Saturday | 9:00 – 16:00; Sunday | 9:30 – 16:00 Pictures: Jordyn Johnson Follow us on social media for more travel news, inspiration, and guides.
