Diving in Tofo, Mozambique

Posted on 11 May 2011

Nestled just below the Tropic of Capricorn on an endless spine of sand dunes, Tofo and Zavora are not only idyllic getaways to simply relax and unwind. Beneath the warm teal rollers of the Indian Ocean lies a frenzy of action that awaits the intrepid adventurer. It is not surprising to find yourself awake at the crack of dawn anticipating the day’s encounters. There is plenty of exploration to be done with a multitude of dive sites to choose from, but be prepared to flex some muscle as you launch into the surf. It is well worth it once you are underwater, amongst the tranquility of your breath, where a diverse array of colours, shapes and sizes create a visual feast. These rocky reefs are teeming with creatures displaying all sorts of survival adaptations, from camouflage to poisonous spines, to threatening colours and razor sharp teeth. Be sure to lift your eyes occasionally as Tofo boasts one of the largest populations of the majestic manta ray. If that’s not enough, you may also be lucky enough to swim alongside the world’s largest fish, the whaleshark, as these gentle giants feed on microscopic plankton. In winter, humpback whales display their impressive acrobatics and their songs can be heard on most dives. Dolphin encounters are frequent and various species of sharks and turtles can be seen, not to mentions those tiny critters hiding in the cracks and crevices. It may be a hard day’s work, but it makes it all that much better to put the feet up and enjoy a well deserved ice cold beverage.
