A 26-year-old male and 23-year-old female, suspected abalone poachers, have been arrested and detained following a multi-million rand abalone bust in Bellville on 4 February.

At 9:30 on Saturday morning, Cape Town police officers ‘attached to the K9 Unit executed a search warrant in Bellville and arrested two suspects for the possession of abalone and crayfish.’

Police confiscated 6 416 units of abalone, 4 whole crayfish, and 40 crayfish tails stored inside three deep freezers in a garage. They also found R150 000 in cash.

The two suspects have been detained at Bellville SAPS.

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, shared that ‘these successes also speak to (their) ongoing investment in public safety, and the City’s commitment to supporting (their) local SAPS in helping to fulfill their national mandate.’
