Volcano erupts in Guatemala forcing airport closure

The Fuego volcano in Guatemala, which sits about 16 kilometres from Antigua, the country’s picturesque former capital and biggest tourist attraction, began erupting on 11 December.

Fuego erupts every four to five years on average, According to VOA. An eruption sent rivers of lava pouring down its sides, devastating the village of San Miguel Los Lotes, and killing 215 people in 2018.

 

Authorities have closed the country’s largest airport and highway which are not too far from the eruption. The mountain stands at around 12,000 feet tall. It is one of the region’s most active volcanoes, having erupted multiple times in 2018, in September 2021, and several times this year.

‘The Fuego volcano showed an increase in its activity, which in the last minutes has entered an eruption phase. The eruption is mostly effusive accompanied by incandescent pulses from the lava source,’ the Guatemalan Institute of Volcanology (Insivumeh) said in a statement shared with Newsweek
