Uber offering discounted rates for women travelling to unsafe areas

The head of communications for Uber South Africa, Mpho Sebelebele, said access to safe transport, whether public or private, is of significance to the rights and equality of women.

Further adding that due to the chaos which ensued in Durban last year, from civil unrest to mass flooding, it has been more challenging than ever for residents, especially women, to move around their city confidently.

‘To increase access, Uber is currently offering women 50% off 10 rides to and from areas that are less safe in Durban. The offer ends 30 November 2022, and terms and conditions apply,’ she said.

The offer aims at helping as many women as possible get to that important job interview, doctor’s appointment or essential errands. In offering more safety options which aim at alleviating any chances of harm during a trip, she said they want to ensure that women feel safe while going on about their daily lives.

‘We are also piloting our new Audio Recording feature, which will be rolling out to Durban users soon. This feature allows drivers and riders to record their trips, and submit the recording to our support team in the event of a safety incident,’ she said.

If you feel uncomfortable during your ride, you can now record the audio of the trip within the app. Just tap the blue shield to open your Safety Toolkit and access the Record Audio option. The trip will be recorded in the app, and you can choose to share it with Uber after the ride has ended.

How to claim your trips:

  1. Click on the voucher link here.
  2. Click “Add Voucher” to add it to your account.
  3. The voucher will appear in the ‘Wallet’ section of the app.
  4. The voucher will then be applied when requesting a trip to/from selected areas in Durban.
