COP27 negotiations kick off in Egypt Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 7 November 2022 The 2022 COP27 (Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Summit kicked off on Sunday, 6 November where 120 world leaders will meet at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, kickstarting the two-week negotiations. ‘It is inherent on us all in Sharm el-Sheikh to demonstrate our recognition of the magnitude of the challenges we face and our steadfast resolve to overcome it,’ said COP27 president, Sameh Shoukry at the opening of the summit. The UN’s World Meteorological Organisation’s report confirmed that global temperatures have risen by 1.15ºC since pre-industrial times, as well as rising sea levels, ‘record glacier mass losses and record breaking heatwaves,’ reports BBC. ‘COP27 seeks renewed solidarity between countries, to deliver on the landmark Paris Agreement, for people and the planet,’ the United Nations states. World leaders will each outline what they expect from the meeting on Monday and Tuesday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stresses that ‘COP27 must be the place for urgent and credible climate action.’ President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend COP27 on Tuesday and is expected to deliver a statement regarding South Africa’s plans for developing green-hydrogen projects, supporting the electric-vehicle industry, and other matters relating to the country shifting away from fossil fuels, reports News24. At last year’s COP26, South Africa managed to secure R131 billion over the next three to five years in the form of grants, concessional loans and investment and risk-sharing instruments, including mobilising private sector funding.
