New price list for passport applications and travel documents Posted by Olerato Ramafsi on 3 November 2022 As of the 1st of November 2022, the price for passports and travel documents incurred a signifcant increase. Picture: Getaway Gallery This is according to the information on the Government gazette No 47256 which was published on 6 October. The Department of Home Affairs have stated that this was an oncoming occurrence since the last time the price for travel documents increased was in 2011. They further stated that the changes were prompted by the outcome of a benchmarking exercise which they undertook with other countries. The above found that the tariffs in SA were up to three times lower than the rest of the world. In addition to this, the Department also claimed that the production costs were much higher than what people pay for passports. ‘We believe that people who are able to travel out of the country are financially better off than ordinary citizens and they don’t need to be subsidised in the manner that we have been doing,’ said Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. Here is a breakdown of the fees and previous costs: Adult passport – R600 was previously R400 Maxi adult passport – R1200 was previously R800 Child passport – R600 was previously R400 Official passport – R600 was previously free Diplomatic passport – R600 was previously free Document for travel purposes – R600 was previously R300 Crew member certificate – R600 was previously R350 For those applying for certain documents outside the country: Adult passport – R1200 was previously R400 Adult maxi passport – R2400 was previously R800 Child passport – R1200 was previously R400 Emergency travel certificate – R140 (stays the same) Follow us on social media for more travel news, inspiration, and guides.
