Government will allow Russian oligarch’s yacht to dock in Cape Town Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 26 October 2022 President Ramophosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, has announced that government will not ban Russian billionaire Alexey Morshadov’s yacht, which is headed for Cape Town. This comes after Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis called on the national government to prevent the yacht from docking in the Cape Town Harbour, as the UN has sanctioned the oligarch after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reports Cape{Town}etc. Morshadov is the biggest shareholder in steel holder Severstal PJSC, with ties to Vladimir Putin. He was last seen passing Indonesia on 25 October. Picture: Cape{Town}etc Magwenya told reporters in Pretoria that ‘South Africa has no legal obligation to abide by sanctions imposed by the US and EU,’ and ‘we have no reason to prevent their entry into South Africa.’ The yacht is expected to arrive in Cape Town on 9 November.
