A culinary escape in the Red Cederberg with Justin Bonello

Somewhere in the Cederberg exists a world where time stops. The gin is cold, and the food slow-cooked.

The 71 000 hectares of wilderness rich in flora and fauna is home to wild animals like the Cape leopard, African wild cat, lynx, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, and the Cape fox. It is now also home to Justin Bonello’s new venture, Red Cederberg, situated on Keurbosfontein, a farm that is literally in the middle of nowhere. No electricity. No problem.

The 4-day and 3-night escape hosted by Justin Bonello, South Africa’s bush cook and Ultimate Braai Master, is a deeply personal food journey focused on seasonal fire-inspired food. From picking the vegetables and herbs to kneading the dough, and even collecting garnishes for your gin and tonic, the fire is always at the centre of it all. Providing the perfect opportunity for conversation and the sharing of stories under a starry sky or candlelight in the Waenhuis Kombuis.

Guests get to deep dive into how to make his favourite foods in the Waenhuis Kombuis, get their hands dirty and harvest their own food, or walk up to the Wolfberg Arch for sunrise, maybe even camp out or immerse themselves in the daily life of the farm.

There is also brandy on offer, Musgrave Copper.

‘The Copper Black Honey is by far my favourite of the two pot-still brandy infusions available,’ says Bonello, ‘and is best enjoyed slowly, on the rocks and next to open fire. I also love using it in my cooking as it helps to elevate the flavours.’
