Introducing our 2022/2023 Photography Competition Posted by Matt Sterne on 22 September 2022 Tags:Photography Competition For the new season of our legendary Getaway photography competition, we’re shaking things up a bit. Not to rock the boat, but to stimulate photography’s growth. While we’re still rewarding the very best pictures with incredible prizes, we’ll also be acknowledging creativity in a handful of genre categories. As always, we’ll continue to promote the finest wildlife shots in Africa, acting as a platform for the pool of immensely talented photographers who’ve been contributing to our competition for decades. Wildlife will continue to be a focus but we want to share this platform with other photographers, too, and create a space for up-and-coming snappers to share their shots. Runner-up in last year’s competition, Hesté de Beer – ‘Trapped in the Mara River’ Pick Your Genre Going forward, when you enter your pictures, we encourage you to select a category for which you’d like your image to be considered for additional acknowledgement – the choice of category will not affect the selection of the overall Big Prize winner. Wildlife Anything from feathers to fangs, our Getaway readers have been producing world-class wildlife images for more than 30 years. Drone and Landscape Photography With drone photography continuing to grow and the quality of landscape photography in South Africa particularly impressive, this will be the place to see what bangers the local talent is capturing. People and Culture Documentary photography is a challenging prospect but vital in telling important stories. What story do you want to tell? Street Photography We’re looking for grungy, urban expressions of street scenes – hit the tar and show us what you capture. Travel and Destination Have you been to some distant shores with a camera in hand? Have you travelled to Mongolia in winter, Ireland in summer or Paternoster in spring? If you haven’t travelled afar, don’t be deterred, we’re more interested in the image than the location. Little Vumbura with Wilderness Safaris Emerging Talent In a separate category altogether, we will also be looking for up-and-coming photographers, from complete newbies and novices to folks who have an eye for it, but never thought to give it their best shot. If you’re new to this game, you might want to let us know that you’d like to be considered for this prize, too. We welcome you to encourage children, students, eager-to-learn first-timers, keen-to-grow amateurs and any budding photographers they meet, to send in their pictures. This is more “phone” than “fancy-equipment” photography and about identifying new talent and those with a good eye for captivating images.
