Japan reopens to tourists for the first time in two years Posted by David Henning on 30 May 2022 Japan will open its borders to visitors from 98 countries, after the country closed to tourists two years ago at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida credited his country’s strict policies with helping Japan to weather the pandemic; it recorded fewer than 30 000 deaths. From 10 June, visitors will be allowed to enter the country, but only as part of a tour group. The list of 98 countries will be divided into three categories – red, yellow and blue – to determine whether or not visitors can bypass quarantine measures. Code red countries require a three-day quarantine at a government-designated facility, but those with a valid vaccine certificate may have a three-day home quarantine followed by a negative test result. Code yellow nations are not required to present a negative test result if they are vaccinated but those who are not will have to undergo a three-day home quarantine with a negative test result after the third day. Code blue countries, which include South Africa, do not require a negative test result or quarantine regardless of vaccination status.
