Lufthansa celebrates 60 years of flights to South Africa Posted by David Henning on 17 May 2022 On Saturday 14 May 2022, Lufthansa celebrated 60 years of continuous service to South Africa, reaching a milestone in its history in this country. ‘Since the inception of our very first flight to South Africa on 14 May 1962, Lufthansa has been at the forefront of building trade relations between Germany and South Africa, whilst remaining true to our vision of connecting people and cultures from all over the world,’ says Andre Schulz, General Manager Southern & East Africa Lufthansa Group ‘Our customers and employees are the keys to our successful development in South Africa, and we look back at this moment in history with great pride and we celebrate with you by saying ‘Thank You’ for the last 60 years of flying to South Africa together.’. On 14 May 1962, Lufthansa’s inaugural flight to South Africa departed Germany, making at that time, a series of intermediary steps in Africa using the Boeing 720B, the industry’s best long-haul aircraft at the time. This service offered two weekly flights between Johannesburg and Frankfurt, with four fuel stops in Salisbury (Harare), Nairobi, Khartoum and Athens, which took 16 hours to complete. Lufthansa would like to celebrate its big anniversary with its customers in South Africa offering reduced special fares. Available until 31 May 2022, a return flight with Lufthansa in Economy Class from South Africa to Europe is bookable here for an all-inclusive price starting from R6,650.
