Get wild on wheels! The Kruger 2 Canyon Cycle Tour is back Posted by Anita Froneman on 29 April 2022 The Rotary Hoedspruit Kruger 2 Canyon Cycle Tour, a 100km-ride through four Big Five safari reserves, will be back this year on 16 July after a two-year break to again raise funds for charity. Cyclists will ride through part of Greater Kruger to Blue Canyon Conservancy, traversing the Timbavati, Thornybush, Kapama and Blue Canyon reserves through areas not usually accessible to the public. The dawn to dusk tour caters for a limited field of five pelotons of 20 riders, making it an exclusive event of only 100 riders. The tour is an initiative of the Hoedspruit Rotary Club focused on raising money for anti-poaching initiatives, community conservation and education projects identified in the region. ‘It is a tour and not a race so there is plenty of time to view the impressive scenery and you can be assured of sightings of warthogs, zebra, giraffe, hippo and sometimes a lazy crocodile in a relaxed environment,’ tour organisers said. ‘Every year riders return with exciting stories of close encounters and the wonderful support of their team and guides who accompany each peloton. They talk of the camaraderie that develops on such a day, lifelong friendships are fostered and old ones renewed.’ The pelotons are accompanied by experienced armed guides who are more than capable of warding off any potentially dangerous encounters with elephants or buffalo. ‘A number of riders in two pelotons, both local and international, have patiently waited in the wings for the big day and are again supporting us,’ said Paul White, one of the Rotarian organisers and regular participant in the event. Entry is R4 000 per person.
