Mavungana Flyfishing launches drift-boat operation on the Ash River

With its new full-frame, state-of-the-art inflatable drift-boat, Mavungana Flyfishing is changing the game of trout fly-fishing.

Fly-fishing involves casting artificial flies, which are made from either hair or synthetic materials, according to Britannica.

These flies are designed to mimic fish food sources and are virtually weightless, thus distinguishing them from spin fishing which uses weighted lures.

Trout thrive in the habitats created by fast-moving water, which make drift-boats the perfect vessel for fly-fishing. The boats drift with the current and are extremely easy to control, making it easy for anglers to stand and fish.

Head Guide Gareth Reid commented ‘targeting trout from a drift boat is one of the most iconic styles of fly-fishing throughout North and South America, yet it has never taken off in South Africa.’

‘Until now the Ash River has been spoken about in whispers and only attempted by a few. Restricted to walking the very high and unstable banks, fishing in the past has been largely ineffective, with access being the biggest hurdle,’ he stated.

In addition, Mavungana Flyfishing owns 10 kilometers of the top of the Ash River, preventing public access to fish. As all fishing is fly-only and catch-and-release, there is minimal rod pressure.

Moreover, Reid expressed confidence that the new drift-boat operation can increase tourism in Clarens in addition to contributing to the fly-fishing market.

‘Clarens is a stunningly beautiful town and there are so many great adventure activities, we are very happy to be able to add to that and also to help bring more feet into the village and its economy.’
