Classical showcase in a million-year-old Karoo canyon Posted by Chloe Cowley on 25 March 2022 Place of Dreams (POD) will present Tankwa Classics 2022, back for its second year, with a line-up of some of the country’s most celebrated classical musicians and performers. The event is happening from 1 to 3 April. It will take place in the heart of the Tankwa Karoo, with wind ensembles, pianists, cellists and opera singers performing together under the stunning night sky of the Karoo. Under the musical stewardship of Elna van der Merwe, conductors Pamela Kierman and Riaan van Wyk will lead the ensemble of instrumentalists. Singers include soprano Janel Speelman, mezzo-soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce and baritone Niël Rademan. In addition, the Windworx Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the University of Stellenbosch’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble will add further flair to the programme. Other highlights include projection mapping to classical music with Wayne Ellis, which is a ground-breaking creative collaboration marrying two very different art forms. The incredible performers at the Psychedelic Theatre will also dance for the audience. The programme of events in-between performances will include nature walks with the talented guide Jacques Tredoux or casual strolls at your own leisure along the art walk or to the infamous canyon. Attendees can cool down in the Karoo-style infinity dam or simply kick back, relax and soak up the surrounding nature. Visitors can choose to sleep under the stars or ‘glamp’ it up in a range of accommodation options that will cater to all needs. The team who are putting this event together are either volunteering or gifting their time. Done for the love of music and to create a unique space for talented musicians to perform. They strive to create an overall magical experience for guests. Through ticket sales, POD aims to cover the hard running costs of the event and to create a sustainable future for the farm and the people it employs. The event is a not-for-profit project. Chris Conradie, the visionary behind POD and his partner, Avril Sartori along with Elna van der Merwe came up with the idea of Tankwa Classics. It has been a great opportunity for musicians to perform after a harsh two years of lockdowns. Tickets can be purchased online from Quicket from R800. For general event enquiries contact Avril Sartori at [email protected] or call 082 738 6102.
