Himalayan tahrs sighted in Cape Town making incredible jump Posted by Anita Froneman on 23 February 2022 A very lucky hiker in Cape Town recently came across two Himalayan tahrs on the slopes of 12 Apostles between Hout Bay and Camps Bay. The two at first seem unsure of how to move forward, but then make an incredible jump from the rockface down to the ground. One of the tahrs appears to be slightly bigger, and hiker Frank Kosi says he thinks the pair are a mother and a juvenile. ‘When Himalayan tahrs (mountain goats) fly down the mountain or how a tahr mum teaches her little one not to fear because there is always a way. You just need to find it,’ he wrote on Facebook. ‘We still could not believe our eyes what we saw. Holding breath as it was so moving and impressive.’ Take a look: Himalayan tahrs are native to Asia, and originate from India, Tibet, China and Nepal. They were once kept at the Groote Schuur Zoo, and managed to escape, according to the Table Mountain Fund. These animals thrive on steep, rocky mountains and are known to display magnificent climbing and jumping skills.
