South African passport moves up seven places on global index Posted by Anita Froneman on 17 January 2022 South Africa now ranks 51st on Henley’s Global Passport Index, compared to 58th in 2021. Henley & Partners ranks the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). According to the list, South Africa has visa-free or visa on arrival access to 104 countries and territories. The countries whose citizens have the most freedom of movement are Japan and Singapore, sharing the top spot with visa-free access to 192 countries. The number two spot is shared between Germany and South Korea, with access to 190 destinations, followed by Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain, who can visit 189 countries on a whim. Austria and Denmark follow closely at 188 destinations. The countries that ranked lowest were Syria, with access to 29 destinations, Iraq, with access to 28 and lastly, Afghanistan’s citizens can only enter 26 destinations without obtaining a visa.
