Qantas returns to South Africa after nearly two years Posted by Taylah Strauss on 5 January 2022 Qantas returned to South African skies after a nearly two-year-long absence. The first commercial passenger flight from Sydney landed at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday, January 4. The resumption of flights for the Australian airline was originally set to be in July 2021, but this was delayed. In late October, the airline announced it would resume flights between South Africa and Australia in January 2022. READ: Qantas to resume flights in and out of South Africa in January 2022 True to their word, Qantas’ return to the South African airspace coincides with Australia dropping their restrictions against South African passengers around mid-December, according to Business Insider. The airline’s new schedule includes triweekly flights between Sydney and Johannesburg on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
