Canada lifts travel ban against 10 African countries

Canada has lifted its travel ban on 10 African countries, South Africa being one of them, on 19 December 2021 after their efforts to curb the Omicron variant received much criticism.

Initial travel restrictions were against travellers from South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana and Namibia amongst others, as Canada attempted to fight the spread of the Omicron variant.

Canadian Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said the state will reimpose testing requirements from Tuesday, December 21, to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system.

The Canadian government has advised against all non-essential travel for the time being.
