5 South African Christmas markets to visit this year Posted by Taylah Strauss on 21 December 2021 We all know the dread of Christmas shopping: impossibly long queues, you can’t find the perfume your cousin likes, and your wallet is crying in agony. There is no reason why Christmas shopping should be such a chore when local markets are a surefire way to make them fun. Either indoors or outdoors, more often than not Christmas markets offer better quality, and more unique products for less. Without further ado, have a look at some Christmas markets in sunny South Africa. 1. The Fab Ideas Market, Cape Town What: The Fab Ideas Market’s Christmas Gift Fair is one of the most anticipated markets in Cape Town, with a wide array of goods, ranging from home décor, jewellery, clothing, handmade crafts, and even selected treats or foods. All items are barcoded, and the market will pitch up tills for debt and credit facilities to ensure hassle-free payment and customer satisfaction. Entry is free of charge, and part of the proceeds of the market go to various charities and sponsorships. When: The Fab Ideas Market will be hosting their 11th annual Christmas Gift Fair from 17 to 22 December 2021. Where: Sun Valley Primary School, Brigantine Avenue, Sun Valley, Cape Town. For more information, click here. 2. The Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair, Cape Town What: The Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair is hosted annually during December in the Kent Hall of Pinelands High School. This market is abuzz with energy, and offers a selection of gifts by 200 crafters, of which gifts include handcrafted cards and Christmas decorations, treats, baskets, wire and leatherwork, glassware and needlework, jewellery and children’s gifts, books, clothing and so many more. They also have a pop-up nursery with well-priced plants. Free entry and secure parking. The market is cashless, so don’t forget your credit card! When: 10 to 23 December 2021. The Crafter’s Fair, Johannesburg What: With variation, excellent quality, and reasonable prices, this market is not to be missed. With many exhibitors, you’ll find tables stocked to the brim with scrapbooking, jewellery, toys, décor items, gifts, and so much more. Children under 12 do not need to pay an entry fee. Bryanston Market, Johannesburg What: The Moonlight Markets series from Bryanston Market specialises in organically grown fresh produce, deli foods, crafts, gifts, jewellery, and clothing made from mainly natural materials. In addition to supporting small businesses and solo entrepreneurs, they have a wide array of eateries available. This family-orientated market charges R10 per person When: The Moonlight Markets series will take place from 14 to 18 December. Irene Village Market, Pretoria What: The Irene Village Market, some 40 kilometres north of Jozi is known for its live music, locally produced food, and arts and crafts. Catering to a wide audience, this market often provides an escape from the daily 9 to 5 grind. When: The market will be held on 4, 11, 16, and 18 December 2021.
