Keep an eye on Hotel Krige, the hottest new kid on the block Posted by Anita Froneman on 23 September 2021 A brand new hotel opening up in the era of Covid? Yes, you read right. What a sight for sore eyes. Local tourism has been picking up and with summer lying ahead of us, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that South Africans will travel like never before. Hotel Krige opened its doors in Stellenbosch barely a few months ago, and is already promising to be one of the trendiest and most exciting spots in town. Here’s why: Kyle Leonard, Hotel Krige’s General Manager has two interests that resonate with Stellenbosch: he is an avid wine slash beer enthusiast, and a big supporter of small local businesses. ‘We are currently stocking the hotel’s wine cellar with a variety of wines from the Stellenbosch region and surrounds and believe strongly in the responsible travel principles of offering locally produced wines which are grown on the beautiful hills and valleys that surround our town,’ Kyle says. He is also passionate about craft beer and is a member of the Helderberg Home Brewers society. He plans to introduce a range of locally brewed beers to Hotel Krige’s beverage offering soon. To enjoy these wonderful beverages, Hotel Krige happens to have a rooftop that will be transformed into a lounge this coming month, perfect for sundowners on a summer’s afternoon with exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated with elegant finishes (the carpets remind me of thick clouds), each equipped with a kitchenette and smart TV. Guests can also relax in the communal downstairs lounge, and professionals on workcation have ample space to work at the large table or in the boardroom. The rooftop lounge is not open just yet but the hotel is open for business and eager to welcome locals and travellers alike. What do Stellenbosch locals like to do most? Cycle and wine. Ride In Bike Hire So, for a morning adventure, hit the trails. The popular Ride In bike rental and cafe on Jonkershoek Road is the place to be. There’s lekker space for the kiddies to play while the parents enjoy their post-ride brekkie. On offer to hire is just about any bicycle you can think of (I opted for an e-bike, no judgement please). Road bikes, town bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes. From entry-level bikes to hardcore beasts, they’ll hook you up. They also offer tours and host events. All the staff are welcoming and service is friendly. Surrounded by dramatic mountain views and lush lawns, the estate’s Manor House and Werf stands proud as a Provincial Heritage Site. I popped into the Taphuis restaurant (one of several dining options on the property) where the gourmet menu offers beautiful meals and unparalleled wines. It so happened that I was there on one of the first truly warm summery days, and there could be nothing more perfect on earth than the slightly chilled, creamy chardonnay I sipped on the whole afternoon. Dig into homegrown food sourced from local farmers and suppliers while enjoying the outdoors on the shady terrace with garden views.
