The Great South African Road trip series with Mazda and Getaway Posted by Anita Froneman on 27 September 2021 Maintenance service? Check. Padkos? Check. Spray paint…? Wait, what? Buckle up, and Change Your View with Mazda and Getaway as we go on the road trip of a lifetime, and stand a chance to win one of three superb holidays for four. Over the next six months three street artists head into South Africa with Mazda and Getaway to discover unheralded areas of the country, create new art work and prove that curious travel is all about seeing things differently. It’s serious road trip time, but with a twist. Go where most don’t venture. With a new, curious attitude. So where to, with who and when? Kamiesberge Mountains with @fersyndicate in September The first journey heads up into the Northern Cape to the hidden back routes of the Kamiesberge Mountains. The scattering of giant granite outcrops, named Th’amies (jumble) in Khoikhoi are very similar to Zimbabwe’s Matopos and – unforgivably – mostly unexplored. Along for the ride in a Mazda CX-3 is Cape Town street artist Quasiem Gamiet, a man who has cornered the market in thinking differently about pretty much everything. @Fersyndicate, as he’s known, works in illustration, graffiti and mural back home, but out there his aim will be to create a work that celebrates his (and our) breakout from the city. He’s also keen to get on his vintage mountain bike and explore the region. Eastern Cape backroads with @bief37 in December The second journey partners up with Gqeberha-based artist and storyteller Buntu Fihla, a son of the Eastern Cape, as he reveals the hidden routes and histories of his Eastern Cape backyard in Mazda’s new BT-50 double cab. Not to give too much away, but there’s a pilgrimage of sorts as he returns to the umQwashu tree near Pedi to revisit a previous artwork. Stories, challenges, the unexpected. Vintage Eastern Cape. The Tugela Falls with @giffy in February The third journey heads up into the highlands of Qwa Qwa, to the northern aspects of the Drakensberg, beyond Phuthaditjhaba to the edge of the escarpment. The aim is not only to reach the world’s highest waterfall but track the iconic lammergeier, or bearded vulture in its home range. Driving a Mazda CX-30, is Durban-based street artist Gifford Duminy, a committed conservationist and wildlife nut, who’ll spread the eco message by creating a giant work of the famed bird up in the highlands, along with a local artist.
