Travellers to pay new departure tax when leaving the Maldives from 2022 Posted on 19 July 2021 A new departure tax will be payable to tourists and residents leaving the Maldives from January 1, 2022. The country’s president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, signed off on an agreement to the nation’s Airport Taxes and Fees Act which currently charges R377.26 airport service charge for everyone departing the Maldives. As of next year, a new departure tax which needs to be paid in US dollars will replace the current one. The amounts for tax will differ. Residents will pay less than travellers who are visiting. Travellers booked in the business class and private charter flights will pay more than those booked in the economy class. According to Maldivian news outlet Raajje, here’s what each person can expect to pay in departure taxes from January 1, 2022: Economy: $30 (R435.3 – foreign travellers) or $12 (R174.21 – Maldivians) Business: $60 (R870.60 – everyone) First: $90 (R1 305.90 – everyone) Charters: $120 (R1 741.20 – everyone) Diplomats and children younger than 2 are exempt from paying this tax. Additionally, all passengers flying internationally from Velena International Airport will be charged an airport development fee of $25 (R362.75).
