Lufthansa suspends direct flights to Cape Town

Posted on 15 February 2021

Germany announced that the ban on South Africa, eSwatini and Lesotho, which was supposed to be lifted on February 17, may be extended. This comes as uncertainty runs rife due to the pandemic.

In a move to prevent the introduction of SARS-CoV2-variants, the German Government on 30th January 2021 has imposed a general ban on travel and entry from countries with widespread occurrence of such virus variants (referred to as areas of variant of concern). These include South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho. The ban is preliminarily limited until 17.02.2021 and may be extended depending on the development of the pandemic,’ said German Missions in South Africa, Lesotho and eSwatini.

Lufthansa Group Airlines have adjusted their routes to South Africa. Direct flights between Cape Town and Frankfurt have been suspended until further notice.

Flights from Frankfurt and Zurich to Johannesburg, however, will operate at three flights per week.

‘In the current global situation, entry regulations for various destinations, including our hubs in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, as well as the mandatory mask mandate, may change at very short notice,’ said Lufthansa gm Southern Africa and East Asia, Dr André Schulz according to Travel News.

Since the end of August, all fares of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings can be rebooked without a rebooking fee. Originally, this fare offer was valid for (re-)bookings until the end of February.

Now the offer is being extended again: all airline fares can now be rebooked free of charge as often as desired up to May 31, 2021, if the rebooking is also made before that date. After that, another rebooking is possible free of charge.
