Bear chases snow skier down slope in Romania

A skier in Romania got more than he bargained for on a recent ski trip to the Predeal Mountain Resort when he found himself being chased down the slope by a bear.

The unidentified skier managed to stay ahead of the sprinting animal, believed to be a brown bear, and later threw his backpack off which distracted the bear and possibly saved the man’s life.

The ordeal was caught on video by terrified onlookers.

‘He did a pretty cool move, which is a really safe one when you want to get away from the bear,” one witness said. ‘He dropped his bag off, and, well, the bear was dragged towards the bag.’

A police spokesperson said the skier did the right thing. ‘The bear was distracted by things inside his backpack. We are considering to relocate the bear, who should be hibernating now, anyway, but in recent years, we have more bears confronting skiers in the winter.’

Romania is home to an estimated 6,000 brown bears and it is not uncommon to spot them in the mountains during winter.
