Owl Rescue Centre searches for hadeda shot with arrow Posted by Anita Froneman on 29 January 2021 The Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort is appealing to the public to help them find an injured hadeda that was sighted in Johannesburg with an arrow stuck in its body. ‘We are trying to track and rescue this little guy in Greenside Johannesburg. If everyone living in that area can keep a lookout and let us know if you see him. He still flies pretty well,’ they posted on Facebook. He was last spotted at the corner of Greenfield Road and Muirfield Road. The hadeda ibis population in South Africa is thriving, as these large birds are known to inhabit urban areas and have few natural predators. In Johannesburg, these birds nest in the many tall trees and feed on worms and insects in many a suburban garden. Hadedas are notorious for their shrill call, and have been dubbed by some as South Africa’s nationwide alarm clock. They have an incredible life span of up to 20 years. Anyone with information on the injured hadeda can reach the Owl Rescue Centre on 082 719 5463.
