Panorama Route waterfalls gushing after rainfall

The Lisbon and Berlin Falls along the Panorama Route are overflowing with water after the Graskop area received 160mm of rain overnight between Sunday and Monday, January 25.

Tropical Storm Eloise battered Mpumalanga, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a Level 9 Warning.

In a statement, SAWS said: ‘Following landfall, we expect “Eloise” to continue along a fairly straight path, taking it overland through southern Mozambique (as the system weakens somewhat) during the course of Sunday, 24 January 2021.

‘It is at this time that the north-eastern parts of South Africa can anticipate the onset of heavy tropical rain, particularly along the escarpment and lowveld areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, as well as the northern sector of Limpopo.

The northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal will continue to experience heavy rains until Monday.

‘In terms of the impacts of heavy rain, SAWS warns that there is a severe risk (ORANGE, level 9) for disruptive rain associated with widespread flooding and flood-related damage of infrastructure including housing, roads and bridges over the aforementioned areas,’ the weather service said.

Parts of Limpopo also received bountiful rainfall, filling out rivers that have long been dry. The Zandspruit River, which passes through private reserves in Hoedspruit received 60mm of rain over the weekend and is flowing once again.
