Most powerful passports in 2021 Posted by Anita Froneman on 7 January 2021 The strongest passports in the world have been announced according to the Henley Passport Index, with Japan coming out on top. The country offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 191 countries. Asia stood strong as Singapore came in second place and South Korea tied with Germany for third place. South Africa ranked at number 54 out of 110. Coming in last on the list is Afghanistan, right after Iraq. The Henley Passport Index claims to be ‘the most rigorous and sophisticated measure of global access. It goes beyond a simple ranking of passports to provide you with an in-depth picture of your travel freedom, including which countries you can access with which type of visa’. According to CNN, Christian H. Kaelin, chair of Henley & Partners said: ‘Just a year ago all indications were that the rates of global mobility would continue to rise, that travel freedom would increase, and that holders of powerful passports would enjoy more access than ever before.’ ‘The global lockdown negated these glowing projections, and as restrictions begin to lift, the results from the latest index are a reminder of what passport power really means in a world upended by the pandemic.’ View the complete list here.
