Hippo steals crocodile’s kill in Crook’s Corner Posted by Anita Froneman on 5 January 2021 Lean van Biljon captured an exquisite sighting on a recent trip to the Kruger National Park with his colleagues. The group visited the watering hole at Crook’s Corner where South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe meet, not knowing they will see a real crook in action! A crocodile snatches an unsuspecting cow from the bank and drowns it. Minutes later, a hippo joins in the commotion and steals the croc’s kill. ‘As there were a lot of crocodiles showing interest in the cattle, we just knew that something was about to happen! Some of the cattle from the second herd were not comfortable with “something” in the water and opened up some space between them. A late arrival entered the space and within seconds after she started drinking water, a crocodile caught the cow,’ Van Biljon told Latest Sightings. ‘Multiple hippos then decided to join in. We did not know what their real interest was in the cow, but they tried to take it away from the crocodiles. In some instances, we thought they were just moving the cow away from the crocodiles. In the process, it looked like they were biting it! We couldn’t say if they were trying to eat the cow or trying to “save” it.”’ Take a look at the action: Picture: Screenshot from YouTube Related Posts Cape Town’s sustainability: Leading the way in environmental initiatives 1 June 2023 As National Environmental Month commences in South Africa, Cape Town stands proudly at the forefront... read more Kapama to host Safari Guide of the Year Awards 2023 1 June 2023 Kapama Private Game Reserve near Hoedspruit will host this year’s Safari Guide of the Year... read more Blood Lions relaunches for public viewing on YouTube 1 June 2023 Award-winning documentary feature film Blood Lions has been relaunched on YouTube for public viewing, creating... read more PREV ARTICLE NEXT ARTICLE
