Aardvark outwits brown hyena

Posted on 13 November 2020

Aardvark sightings are an anomaly during the day. These animals are nocturnal and are very rarely seen above ground when the sun is out.

Latest Sightings recently shared a video of an aardvark, or anteater, outwitting a brown hyena within the Greater Mabula Private Game Reserve.

At first the aardvark is seen meandering about carefree, foraging for a delicious helping of termites.

A brown hyena enters the frame and the excitement begins. The hyena makes a beeline for the oblivious aardvark.

Watch below to see how the aardvark escapes with his life.

Known as the architects of the bush, the aardvark is an impressive burrower. This animal will create an underground cave for itself that will be occupied by another animal, like a porcupine, once the aardvark moves on.

Aardvarks are currently listed as ‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN, however, some hunters in rural African villages still kill this animal for meat and sometimes use its body parts as charms, according to the African Wildlife Foundation.
