If you’re planning to travel by air over the festive season, new local airline Lift is taking to the skies in December, and bookings are open.

Co-founder Gidon Novick said the airline will not try to attract customers with lower prices than their competitors, but instead aims to offer value for money.

‘Cutting prices is not a sustainable strategy. It is easy to do, but everyone will then lose money,’ he said according to My Broadband.

South Africa's local airline prices for December compared

Local airlines compete for the best fares, service and value for money.

We looked at the prices of a one-way ticket from Cape Town International Airport to OR Tambo International Airport on the same day as offered by Lift, Mango, Kulula, FlySafair and SAA. The date of Lift’s first flight is December 10 and was chosen to compare the lowest prices available on that day. Here’s what we found when searched on November 11:

Lift: R855

Mango: R977

Kulula: R882

FlySafair: R822

SAA: R1,192

One way tickets from Johannesburg to Cape Town were slightly higher but similar in price difference, except for SAA:

Lift: R1,195

Mango: R1,215

Kulula: R1,158

FlySafair: R1,322

SAA: R3,147

The new carrier’s name was chosen by the public in a nationwide competition and ‘Lift’ emerged as the winner from over 25,000 entries.
