Northern Cape police rescue pangolin from poachers

A pangolin was rescued from suspected illegal trade in the Northern Cape on Sunday, November 8.

The animal was being held in an old caravan park in Dingleton, situated in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) police cluster.

A team consisting of members of the Kuruman Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit and local police officers followed up on a tip-off they received, according to a SAPS statement.

The members were able to ascertain who the person was that had the keys to the house after canvassing the local community.

When they searched the house, they discovered a male pangolin in one of the locked rooms.

Upon further investigation, it became apparent that the suspect had fled the scene when the police arrived. The pangolin was seized and transported to a local veterinarian.

A case docket of possession of endangered species was opened. The police investigations are continuing and an arrest is imminent.
