Train crash caught by statue in Netherlands

A train in Spijkenisse in the Netherland launched through its barrier at the end of the track on Sunday, November 1 at De Akkers metro station.

A whale tail sculpture at the end of the line, protruding from a body of water 10m below the track, essentially ‘caught’ the train and prevented it from plummeting.

The train was suspended above the water, balancing on the sculpture.

The incident occurred around midnight, according to the BBC, with only the train driver on board at the time. The driver has no reported injuries and was able to exit the train without assistance.

The sculpture, called Whale Tails, was erected in 2002 and was created by architect and artist Maarten Struijs.
