How to hike: Waterfall Trail Posted on 13 October 2020 It’s time to take our series to the Eastern Cape. While there are many incredible multi-day hikes in the province, we thought we’d focus on a day-trip so that both those who are staying a while and those who are passing through can enjoy. The Waterfall Trail takes you on the first part of the famous Otter Trail, before returning to where you began. The Otter Trail is a multi-day hike along Storms River that is known all over the world. Booking for this hike has to be done well in advance and is not for the faint-hearted as you have to carry all your equipment, clothing and food on your back as you go. If you would like to experience part of this trail without having to make such a big commitment, this route is a great way to experience it. Found just beyond the border of the Eastern and Western Cape, this route makes its way through the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve and is a great way to be welcomed into the province. You will need to pay entrance to the park before you can start on your journey. Take the route over the suspension bridge and then follow signs to the trail. Make the 3km walk along the rugged coastline carefully. The hike isn’t particularly easy and can be difficult during high tides. While the route starts off quite simply, the second half along the coastline gets a bit rocky and good shoes and balance are key. At the end of the 3km trek, you will come to a waterfall with a deep pool. This makes the hike a perfect one for taking a big picnic and your swimming costume. While away a few hours in the pool, taking in this incredible spectacle of nature before making your way back the way you came.
