UK implements three-tiered lockdown Posted by Anita Froneman on 13 October 2020 United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a new three-tiered approach to lockdown. This will see the region categorised into medium, high and very high levels, each with their own set of regulations to curb the spread of COVID-19. The United Kingdom has experienced a sudden rise in COVID-19 infections. The area that falls under a medium level tier, which is the largest part of England, will remain under the rules imposed in September after the country saw a sudden surge in new cases. This includes the limit of six people allowed at gatherings, pub and bar closures and a curfew for businesses between 10pm and 5am. Non-essential local travel as well as taking public transport is discouraged. Areas that are classified as very high level tiers are not allowed any social gatherings and no one is allowed to travel in and out of very high level areas except for work and other essential reasons. The Liverpool City Region is currently the only very high level area, according to The Independent. Johnson added that residents are discouraged from travelling between tiers, as doing so could increase the risk of spreading COVID-19.
