First Choice’s delicious pap tert recipe Posted on 13 October 2020 Most of us have grown up with maize porridge, or pap, as we know it locally. It’s a South African staple and has become even more legendary with the rise in popularity of the ‘paptert’. This dish is often enjoyed with braaivleis and sauce, whether it is a juicy onion and tomato stew or another South African favourite, chakalaka. Celebrating our South African food heritage, First Choice created the Papalaka, or should we say Chakalekker? Don’t be surprised if everyone comes back for seconds! It’s the perfect side dish for any braai or dinner party and so easy to make. Let’s just say you can be a beginner in the kitchen. Chakalaka Pap Tart A savoury side dish to make your home braai or campfire meal a firm South African favourite. Ingredients: For the maize meal: 4 cups water, 3 cups First Choice Milk, 2 tsp salt 2 cups maize meal, 2 tbsp First Choice Butter For the tart: 1 large onion, chopped, 1 tin whole peeled tomatoes 1 tin spicy chakalaka, 240 g First Choice Cheddar Cheese Directions: For the maize meal: Place the water and First Choice Milk in a pot on medium to high heat, and bring to the boil. Add salt and maize meal and whisk until combined, with no lumps. Turn the heat to low and let the maize meal steam for 45 minutes. Stir in the First Choice Butter and set aside. For the tart: Fry the onions in a bit of oil and add a teaspoon of sugar to caramelise. You can make one large tart or serve them in individual dishes. Start with a layer of maize meal, followed by fried onions, tomato, chakalaka and First Choice Cheese. Repeat with another layer of each and finish off with First Choice Cheese. Place in the oven and grill for 15–30 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown. Keep a close eye on it. Serve and enjoy!
