Japan will move to Level 2 of their lockdown on October 1, which will see the lifting of the long-standing travel restrictions.

The country will welcome visitors from all countries worldwide but will restrict the destinations that residents may visit. Countries that residents will be allowed to visit include Australia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Brunei, and Belgium, according to Asian Review but a full list has not been released yet.

Japan has not allowed international tourists since its lockdown started early this year.

Government is also in talks with 16 countries including China, Vietnam, and Taiwan to resume business travel. Japanese nationals are still encouraged to avoid non-essential travel.

Inbound traffic will be capped at 1,000 visitors per day and all arrivals must quarantine for 14 days.

The far Eastern country will now also for the first time welcome back foreign residents who work and live in Japan but were stuck outside of the country at the time that lockdown was implemented, according to SoraNews24.

Japan has been praised by some for the decision to enforce an unusually long lockdown, resulting in a relatively low number of infections and deaths. The country has a total of 82,572 confirmed COVID-19 cases and has recorded a total of 1,551 deaths as of September 29.
