For most travellers, arriving at an international landmark or famous attraction is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, it seems not everyone enjoys visiting these places as much as they had hoped.

A study done by Uswitch shows how much time people spent on giving iconic places negative reviews on TripAdvisor. The three most complained-about places were the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum and the Big Ben. The Eiffel Tower has an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 and received 140 134 reviews on TripAdvisor. Visitors however reportedly spent an astonishing 402 hours writing about their bad experiences at the landmark.

The Eiffel Tower is the worst reviewed attraction on TripAdvisor in the world.

‘Too much waiting, overpriced and really rude staff! The landmark is in terrible condition, paint going off everywhere. The whole place looks like it’s under construction. Lines are long and confusing… many people don’t know where to wait,’ one negative review said.

‘Horrible experience, stand in line to stand in line to get into ticket stand in line to stand in elevator line to see the greed of the operator to cram too many people in to where it is not enjoyable and people are litterally in your face. They could restrict the number of people allowed in but they just keep cramming them in. Don’t waste your money, take a picture from the ground,’ another reviewer said.

Rome’s historic Colosseum does not even come close, but still took second place with 41 hours or of negative review writing online and London’s Big Ben cost visitors 33 hours of their collective time.

These bad reviews might deter potential future visitors from spending their time and money on seeking out these famous landmarks, because a whopping 94% of consumers say an online review has convinced them to avoid a business, according to Review Trackers. People are also 21% more likely to leave a review after a negative experience than a positive one.
