Blood Lions to host free webinar series Posted by Anita Froneman on 3 July 2020 A documentary feature film called Blood Lions shook the world when it exposed South Africa’s cruel canned hunting industries. South Africa’s canned hunting industry remains operational. ‘Currently, anywhere between 8 000 and 10 000 predators, possibly more, are being held in small enclosures on almost 300 captive predator facilities across the country,’ they say on their website. Other predators including cheetah, leopards and tigers are often also the victims of this lucrative trade. Here is a visual representation of the typical life of a captive bred predator, used for entertainment, posted on their website: The organisation works hard to put an end to this exploitation through various campaigns to create awareness and educate the public. Now, Blood Lions is launching a series of webinars that will unpack different elements which make up the captive predator breeding industry in South Africa and will be hosted by various specialists from the conservation sector. The first session takes place next week Thursday July 9, and then every second week thereafter. Anyone is free to join, but space is limited to 100 attendees. If you’d like to attend the first session, you can RSVP at the link below. First session: Topic – The CON in Conservation When – Thursday, 9 July Time – 16h30 – 17h15 SAST RSVP here: https://tinyurl.com/BloodLionsWebinar1 The organisation also wrote a letter to various Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the South African Government to commemorate Youth Day on June 16 in South Africa. The letter calls for a zero CITES lion bone export quota to be set in support of the global call to ban live wildlife markets as well as the use of wildlife products for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
