Celebrate Africa Day Posted by Anita Froneman on 25 May 2020 Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. It is known today as the African Union. The purpose is to promote solidarity between African nations and to eliminate colonialism in Africa. While the political aspect of Africa Day is the reason behind this commemoration (and a worthy one at that), Africans across the continent also take this day to pause and reflect on what it means to be a child of Africa. Being the second largest continent in the world, we have amazing natural landmarks to boast. The longest river on the continent, the Nile in Egypt is over 6,694km long and the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is over 5,894m high. Aside from rivers and mountains, of course, there are our animals. ‘Everything in Africa bites, but the safari bug is worst of all,’ writer Brian Jackman once said.
