There’s plenty to feed your bush-loving wanderlust. In the park, the Van den Bergs reveal nine of their best driving routes, while Romi Boom covers the best 4×4 routes from east to west. Anton Crone explores Northern Kruger while testing out the nifty new KrugerExplorer App, and Angus Begg shows us what fun is in store for families at Manyeleti. Justin Fox also recalls being alone, on foot, in Kruger as part of an eco-training field course. Other travel stories worth a read include Michelle Hardie’s Sutherland, where she meets more stars than you can imagine, and Greg Penfold treats us to an autumnal, budget-friendly tour of Poland in the international feature. On the cover Find out more about ‘Stompie’, captured by Cameron Scott Tag @getawaymagazine and @capeunionmart in your favourite travel pics and your reminiscing could score you a feature in our Instaspace photo well – or even the title of Snap of the Month and a R500 Cape Union Mart voucher prize. #explore If your nostalgia is more wordy, feel free to drop us a line (no more than 250 words, plus any pics) to [email protected]. The reader with the winning letter gets awesome gear from GSI and Ram Mountaineering, worth R2,000! Stay safe and happy reading! Here’s what you can expect to see in the May/June issue: Justin Fox – Ilha de Moçambique, page 48 Think colonial buildings crumbling genteelly in the tropical heat, dhows plying luminous shallows, a muezzin’s haunting call to prayer – this is beguiling Ilha de Moçambique. For three centuries prior to 1898, the island was the capital of Portuguese East Africa. With its rich history, magnificent architecture and palm-fringed shores, this Unesco World Heritage site is full of enchantment. Although in many parts dilapidated, Justin Fox found it to be a photographer’s playground. Angus Begg – Manyeleti, page 64 With Kruger Park family holidays getting increasingly expensive, and good sightings more often than not surrounded by vehicles, Manyeleti is a viable alternative – and it’s still in the Greater Kruger. Anton Crone – Northern Kruger, page 70 The lack of crowds, sublime landscape, diversity of animals and stupendous birdlife make Kruger’s far north well worth the trip, particularly if you travel under a rain cloud. Romi Boom – Kruger 4×4 trails, page 80 Ever wondered what the wildest parts of Kruger National Park look like? Not sure which rustic off-road adventure is the right one for you? The multiday Mafunyane and Lebombo trails both offer highlights aplenty but differ in terms of nitty gritty.
