South Africans to be repatriated from Brazil Posted by Anita Froneman on 7 April 2020 Sixty-one South Africans will be evacuated from Brazil and brought home tomorrow, 8 April. ‘It gives me the greatest of pleasure to report back to you that in the early hours of the eighth of this month we will be able to evacuate or repatriate you back to your country where you will be united with your friends, loved ones and families,’ South African Ambassador to Brazil, Ntsiki Mashimbye said. Any other South Africans in neighbouring countries such as Peru or Chile wishing to return home are allowed to board the flight if they are registered with relevant authorities and can get to the airport. Anyone who wants to get on the flight should contact the South African embassy in their host country as soon as possible. To qualify, passengers must be registered at the South African Embassy in Brazil or the South African consulate-general in São Paulo. Those who want to board the flight should be at the Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo at 6pm on Tuesday for screening and verification and check-in at 10pm, with the flight departing for Johannesburg at 2am on Wednesday. On arrival in South Africa, all passengers will be screened and put under 14-day quarantine regardless of symptoms. ‘Should you wish not to be quarantined then you are advised not to return to South Africa during the current national lockdown,’ the government says.
