Dubai floods after torrential downpour

Unusually heavy rains in Dubai caused massive delays and even resulted in flight cancellations at the Dubai International Airport on Sunday 12 January.

‘Customers are being contacted and sent their updated booking to the email address registered with Emirates at the time of booking. Dubai Airports can confirm that due to heavy rainfall and flooding earlier today, Dubai International (DXB) is experiencing operational disruptions,’ an official said.

‘We are working closely with our service partners to get back to full operations as soon as possible, however, flight delays are expected to continue through the day with some cancellations and diversions to Dubai World Central (DWC).’

Heavy showers also fell in the Arabian Gulf. Travellers faced horrible road conditions and experienced a flurry of hail in Abu Dhabi. The National Centre of Meteorology predicted that the regions of Sharjah and Ajman would receive more heavy rain, while winds would cause clouds of dust, hampering visibility.

‘The scary part was water coming through the electrical points and even the electrical box. We had to call security to switch off the power supply and then moved downstairs,’ Sabina Hammed, a resident in Emirates Living, district eight, told The National.

According to Gulf News, massive cleanup efforts are underway, in which over 3,000 workers were deployed to clean up roads and cities. Weather conditions are stable at the moment, but more rain is expected to fall on Tuesday 14 January. The sea will be rough, with up to seven-foot waves offshore on the Arabian Gulf.
