In the past 14 months, the CTAA has helped three new airlines touch down in Cape Town, added four new destinations, and seven additional route expansions to Cape Town. A total of 750,000 inbound seats have also been added to Cape Town’s network, and this had resulted in nearly doubling the capacity at the airport. It has also added a whopping $400-million in direct tourism spending to the South African economy.

There has also been a 9% increase in international passenger traffic, and these come from the following routes:

  • Return of United Airlines to Africa with a direct route to Newark/New York commenced on 15 December 2019)
  • Austrian Airlines from Vienna commenced on October 27
  • Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong commenced on 13 November
  • FlyWestair from Windhoek (Eros) via Oranjemund commenced on 7 October
  • Airlink to St Helena Island to commence in December 2019

Cape Town International Airport was also named the winner of the 4–20-million passengers category. The awards recognised that the airport has sustained growth in international passenger numbers year-on-year, and there are also major expansion plans in the pipeline.

In the under 4-million passenger category, Antananarivo Ivato International Airport in Madagascar was crowned the winner.
