Uber is launching a fleet of mopeds in Paris

Posted on 18 October 2019

Uber is launching a fleet of self-driven e-mopeds in the City of Love. All you need is a photo of your valid driver’s license and the Uber app.

To book a moped, all you have to do is take a photo of your license and Uber will approve your booking in minutes. Then you’ll be sent a pin code and directions to the nearest parked moped.

Mopeds can be parked in any two-wheeled parking spot so the walk is predicted to take no more than two minutes.

The pin code is used to unlock the seat compartment where a helmet, disposable hairnets and reflective safety vests are stored. The pin will also start the engine.

‘Mopeds are a very exciting addition to Uber’s line-up, which already includes rides, bikes, scooters, and most recently, transit,’ said Arvind Srinivasan, head of product – mobility platforms at Uber in an interview with Travel + Leisure.

Paris is famous for its alternative modes of transport. Replacing cars with a more eco-friendly option will allow locals and travellers to see France’s capital, without producing heavy carbon emissions.

‘We’re delighted to find new ways for people to move around without the need to own a car,’ said Billy Guernier, Uber’s Head of New Mobility Platform.

‘The integration of Cityscoot in the Uber app shows how we can become a one stop-shop for all your mobility needs while giving Cityscoot the opportunity to reach new customers. We are proud to help a local player – leader on its market and recognized as a national champion by French government – grow faster and further expand in Europe.’

Cityscoot will recharge the bikes twice a week and check for any maintenance issues. Renting a bite will cost $.32 (R4,73) per minute. Uber has said that the mopeds will not have surge pricing.

Paris is the first city to offer Uber moped services and is aimed to launch at the start of November.
