Tourists face 6 years in jail for stealing sand from beach Posted on 23 August 2019 Tags:French tourists, Sardinia Two French tourists in Sardinia, Italy are facing up to six years in jail for taking 99 pounds (45 kgs) of sand from a local beach. According to The Washington Post, the tourists took sand from Chia beach, which is located on the southern coast of Sardinia. The pair filled 14 bottles with sand and then attempted to drive onto a France-bound ferry in Porto Torres. This is where the Guardia di Finanza caught them. The tourists claimed they were unaware of that a law had been broken and were simply trying to take home a souvenir of their Mediterranean holiday, reports Corriere Della Sera. In August 2017, a law was passed making the removal of sand, pebbles and seashells illegal from Sardinian beaches. Offenders could face fines of up to €3,000 (R50,287,15).
