SA activist offers to buy Joburg zoo ellies Posted on 3 July 2019 Tags:African elephant, Joburg Zoo, Lammie Joburg Zoo is infamous for keeping the world’s loneliest African elephant, Lammie, in captivity. Activists have been up in arms, fighting for the female ellie’s freedom. In a bid to settle the grief, Joburg Zoo recently purchased two more elephants to keep Lammie company. This move has been met with much outrage, so much so that local animal activist John Varty has offered to buy the three elephants from the zoo for R1 million. According to ENCA, The National Council for SPCA is greatly concerned by the situation at Joburg Zoo, and called the zoo irresponsible for keeping the animals in its vicinity. ENCA reported that The City of Johannesburg stipulated the zoo followed the correct procedures, while the zoo itself stated the elephants have taken to their new home. It is a fact that elephants are social animals which form matriarchal herds. Being the world’s largest land mammal, elephants need a vast amount of space to roam and feed, and being confined to a zoo enclosure can have detrimental effects on the animal’s wellbeing.
