This alpine range is shared by Italy and Slovenia, and the Balkan country has just opened a new long-distance hiking trail boasting crisp and sublime views of the Julian Alps on the Slovenian side. The Julian Alps Hiking Trail is 300 kilometres long and requires a 16-day hiking trip to cover the length of it. The trail, which consists of a network of pathways, is split into 16 sections as well, and hikers will cover about 16 kilometres each day on the trail. The trail begins in Rateče, which is near the country’s border with Italy. From there, it’s on through Slovenian towns, villages and cities, like Bled with its iconic castle in the middle of Lake Bled, Bohinj and Bovec. All the while, you’ll be snatching glimpses of the Julian Alps. In Triglav National Park, named after Mount Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps at 2,862 metres. The trail’s sections are designed to accommodate more than just the avid, toughened adventurer. You can go it alone and without a guide, which keeps costs down and accommodates individuals of different fitness levels. Parts of the trail loop back to the beginning, making it suitable for day trips as well. There’s Wi-Fi as well as public transport along the route and at the end, so you don’t have to trek all the way back. You’ll also find accommodation and options for food along the trail, so you won’t be limited to camping and hauling all your belongings for the duration of the hike. An official map of this trail can be expected by the end of June, just in time for summer in Europe.
