Buffalo escapes pride of lions and a crocodile Posted by Adrian Brown on 9 April 2019 Footage recently shared on Latests Sightings shows an ‘epic battle’ between four lions, a crocodile and a male buffalo at the Transport Dam waterhole in the Kruger National Park, and a herd of buffalo coming to the rescue of the bull. History seems to be repeating itself – a separate but similar incident, referred to as the Battle of the Kruger and that involved the exact same animals, happened in the same location 10 years ago. However, this time there was a positive outcome for the buffalo, who escaped the clutches of the dangerous predators. Head of Atamela Tours, Thuli Khumalo captured the incredible footage of the buffalo’s escape. The video shows a few lions taking refuge in the shade at the base of the waterhole. Lions are known to be opportunistic hunters, and with many animals coming to drink there, it’s an ideal hunting spot for these big cats. A large herd of impala can be seen coming down towards the water then darting away as the lions begin to chase them. Latest Sightings says in its official statement, ‘The impalas were too fast for the lions, but at the edge of the water, they spotted an old buffalo bull’ on its own who looked like easy game. In a game of cat and mouse, the buffalo can be seen retreating into the water after the pride of lions attempt to encircle him. Unfortunately, the water is no safe place for the buffalo either and a crocodile begins to target him. ‘The buffalo decides that the water is probably more dangerous than on land, where it can potentially outrun the pride of lions that are now waiting for him to re-emerge from the water,’ says Latest Sightings. As the buffalo comes out of the water a few steps away from a female lion, there is a moment of hesitation between the animals as though they are trying to decide what to do next. The brave buffalo can be seen attempting to scare away the lions, warning them off with his horns, then cries out for help, as buffaloes commonly do when under threat. The old bull’s calls are answered and a massive herd can be seen approaching to chase the lions away.
