Pigcasso the painting pig Posted on 13 March 2019 Tags:art, Cape Town, franschhoek, Pigcasso, pigs A rescued pig that lives at the Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek, Cape Town has been dubbed Pigcasso for her painting prowess. The sow holds the brush between her mouth and moves her head from side to side to make wide brush strokes, creating colourful masterpieces. Pigcasso was rescued from an abattoir in 2016 when she was still a piglet and stays with her new owners, who encourage her to utilise her creative outlets. ‘Pigs are very smart animals and so when I brought Pigcasso here to the barn, I thought ‘how do I keep her entertained?” Joanne Lefson, who runs the sanctuary, told Reuters Africa. You can also visit the Farm Sanctuary SA and meet the world’s most talented, painting pig. Art isn’t exactly our forté here at Getaway, but we do know an awesome adventure opportunity when we see one: Pigcasso even changed things up and swapped a regular canvas for a surf board, casting deep ocean blues and other bright colours onto the smooth board. The characterful sow’s paintings have been a hit with international visitors and markets, and sell for up to R57,000 – that’s a talented pig! The steep costs of these pig-tastic paintings benefit animal welfare organisations, so you can rest assured that you’re helping to save more piglets and other animals. The just-over 200-kg pig does enjoy some foodie favourites, like caramel popcorn and peaches in syrup, but not McDonald’s – although she did add her own thoughts to the fast food company’s red and yellow logo. If you haven’t yet noticed the bright-pink shed in the V & A Waterfront’s Noble Square, then you have until 24 March to catch some of Pigcasso’s best artworks there on canvas. The bright little room has ‘oink’ in capitals and a little pig doodle on the pink outer wall, the same greeting you’ll get when you visit Pigcasso’s website. Swiss watch brand Swatch even collaborated with the pig recently to release the ‘Swatch x Pigcasso’, with a watch-face that boasts the pig’s deep-blue and bright-green brush strokes as its design.
